Servo step motor for star wheel drive

To drive the central starwheel on the latest filling lines at a well-known family company for chocolate spread, our automation partner VDH Systems chose JVL servo step motors with integrated control. Given the significant inertia of this starwheel, the motors are fitted with Newstart planetary gearboxes. The multi-turn absolute encoder ensures that, despite this reduction, the position of the starwheel is always known in the PLC and no additional sensors need to be installed.

The filling lines are capable of filling 7 different types of glass jars, and by using the control capabilities of the  servo step motors , this can be converted extremely quickly.

Danny Van den Heuvel, director at VDH Systems BV explains: “Powered by the JVL servo step motor, we can quickly and accurately position the star wheel. This allows the desired filling speed to be achieved. For every beat of a second, two cups must be filled. By controlling the movement of the star wheel with precisely set acceleration and especially the preset, different deceleration, we can feed the product without making it rock.”

This parameter setting could be perfectly tested with the MAC-Talk software, a very simple software to adjust the motors completely to your wishes. With simple communication to the PLC, the necessary parameters can be sent to the motor, in this case the specific speeds, angle of rotation, torque, etc. for a selected type of jar.

VDH uses Act in Time motors for most machines, for both stepper and servo motors. The most common bus systems are Profinet and Ethernet IP. In particular, the flawless communication over Ethernet IP with very accessible control parameters has proven to be an asset.

Properties and performance of the double filling line:

  • Interchangeable star wheels
  • Frequency controlled conveyor belt
  • Up to 120 cups/minute
  • 16h/day – 5/7days
  • JVL MIS-motor : Servo step motor equipped with Ethernet IP
  • IO link Sensors to Ethernet IP
  • PLC with Ethernet IP
  • HMI 7"
