Omdat verschillende toepassingen leiden tot de meest uiteenlopende eisen aan koppelingen, is er een groot aantal verschillende typen koppelingen met soms tegenstrijdige eigenschappen op de markt verkrijgbaar.

Indien mogelijk moeten de assen vlak naast de koppelingen worden ondersteund om onnodige trillingen te voorkomen. Dit is vooral belangrijk bij elastische koppelingen
